PSAT
About PSAT/NMSQT (from www.collegeboard.org)
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a program cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). It's a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT®. It also gives juniors a chance to enter scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools.
The PSAT/NMSQT measures:
- Critical reading skills
- Math problem-solving skills
- Writing skills
Why take the PSAT?
For Juniors (11th): Students who take the test are automatically qualified for a national scholarship offered through NMSC. The test allows for students to practice taking the test for about 1/2 the cost of the official test without releasing score to colleges. All juniors who plan on applying to universities should take the PSAT.
For Sophomores n(10th) and Freshman (9th): A great way to have a base score or an official practice opportunity. All students are encouraged to take the test.
Cost
The cost of the PSAT is $25. AHS has a limited number of fee waiver available for students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. Priority for fee waivers will be given to juniors. Students can sign-up/purchase the test at the Student Bank through Mrs. Chun.
Where
The test will be administered at Alhambra High School on Saturday, October 15th at 7:30am. Students must show up on time. Those arriving after the test starts will not be allowed to test.

2011-2012 Schedule Change Policy
The following outlines our policy on schedule changes:
Schedule changes will be made for the following reasons:
● Completion of a summer school course
● Incomplete schedule (gap in your schedule) or two courses in the same period in the same semester
● The level of class is incorrect for grade level
● Senior is missing a requirement for graduation
● Schedule conflict
● Desire for another instructor
● Requested the course but do not need the credit
● Requested the course but no longer interested in the subject
● Student is having conflicts with other students in the class or lunch (student needs to discuss with administrator for conflict resolution rather than schedule change)
Honors and AP Courses:
Only online requests will be accepted. Please go to https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dFNQVExFRTk4ZFJEZkcxN2dUTUJqYlE6MQ to submit add/drop request(s). Deadline to submit request(s) is Thursday, September 1, 2011.
Required core courses (English, math, science, social sciences):
Come to the Guidance Office if you are missing a required course. Come only during the incorrect period.
Once you have requested to move out of a class, you must still complete all work for that class, assuming that you will NOT drop the class. Your request may not be honored, and if it is honored, your grade from the previous class will transfer to the new class.

Mock ACT/SAT vs. PSAT
You are going to hearing about several different "SAT" type tests in the coming months. For 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students here are the ones that we'd like you to take. The Mock SAT/ACT is given by Revolution Prep and allows you to practice taking the test without sharing the answering with anyone. This is great to try tests out, to see how you'd normally score, or to check out either the SAT or the ACT. Students are given an option as to which test they'd like to take. Since we offer this Mock twice every school year, a student could easily get 1 practice test for both the SAT and the ACT.
The PSAT is offered mainly for 11th grade students. This is an official exam administered by the collegeboard (owners of the SAT) and is given once every school year to qualify students for scholarships. This is a very important test and ALL juniors who are interested in attending college should take the test. Many 10th grade students also take the test for additional practice. Scores are not shared with colleges for admission purposes.
Mock SAT/ACT
What: It is a practice test offered by Revolution Prep
Where: Alhambra High School

Cost: $10 (all proceeds go towards the AHS Guidance Senior Scholarship Fund)
Purpose: To practice taking the test. Scores are not shared with ANYONE besides yourself. The test is administered by Revolution Prep. Scores are immediately shared with you after the test. This is a great practice tool for the real ACT, the real SAT, and the PSAT exam given by the Collegeboard.
PSAT

The "real" ACT and SAT
It is suggested that students wait until spring of their junior year to start taking these official exams. See your counselor for more information.
SENIORS: The last test date that most colleges will accept SAT and ACT scores from will be from the December test date. This means that you only have 3 opportunities left to take the ACT and SAT. The Mock SAT/ACT offered in September would really be a good idea for you also.
